Chocolate & Confectionery Manufacture

Jacoutot, Auguste: London: Maclaren, in association with Joseph Baker [1900-03, or earlier?]

8.5 x 6 inches, 215 x 150 mm. xv + 211 + 6 advts pages, frontispiece and illustrations. Original red cloth, spine a touch faded, gilt lettering.

A lovely and virtually unmarked example of Jacoutot's famed work on chocolate and confectionery production, published in the early 1900s although its publishing history is obscure.

The National Library of Scotland records an undated edition, with a portrait frontispiece and published by Maclaren & Sons, as being produced in 1903. Although they give no evidence to substantiate their stated date, their volume appears to be identical to my own with their dating possibly based on dates contained in separately bound-in advertisements at the rear. The final date mentioned in advertisements at the rear of my own copy is 1900 (see final illustration on this page).

It is probable there was but one single edition, or print-run, of about 1900-03, or earlier, with the loose sheets being bound to meet demand as required and with the most recent trade advertisements being added at the end.

Whatever the truth of the matter, this important trade work on chocolate production was published for a commercial market; few copies are now in private hands. This an opportunity unlikely to come your way again.
