Karten der Harmonischen Gezeitenkonstanten fur das Gebiet der Westbritischen Gewasser
Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine: 1942.
16.5 x 12 inches, 42 x 31 cms. Title-page, forward, 20 full-page tidal charts of the West Coast of Britain and Ireland. Each of the 20 charts shows the same area of the western British Isles at differing states of tidal flow.
These "Harmonic Constant" tidal charts were issued by the German Kriegsmarine to all German U-boats operating in the dangerous waters to the West of Britain tracking the convoys into Liverpoool and general shipping in the Irish Sea. At least 18 U-boats were lost in action in these waters during the war.
This is a museum quality individually numbered example (Pruf-nr. 0540) - research could perhaps established for which U-boat it was issued.
These tidal and similar U-boat operational charts are rarely found today, many having gone down with their vessel - around 720 U-boats, with about 25,000 crew members, were sunk in action between 1939 and 1945, in percentage terms the highest casualty rate of any large operational unit in the whole of the war.
In very good condition in original green boards, cloth spine, firm binding, the charts clean and unmarked.
Following post-war German legisation, the Nazi symbol in the Kriegsmarine eagle stamp in this original WW2 atlas was later inked-out on the front cover and title page.
